  • Weekend Project - Joy Ornament Pattern

    5 Nov 2009 | 10:00 pm
Looking for a quick weekend project? Need a break from that wall-to-wall project you are working on? The Holiday Ornament Collection includes ornaments that are whole cross stitch and others that contain a few specialty stitches. Depending on your stitching level and speed, you should be able to complete one or more of the ornaments in a weekend. Photo © Connie G. BarwickI stitched the Simple Joy Ornament in a few hours. I used a Threadworx floss, DMC Light Effects Floss, and Charles Craft Aida fabric for my project. You may use any type and color of floss and fabric you like to create…

I know many of you are multi-crafters like me, so I jumped at the opportunity to participate. If you are interested in participating, find the contact information at the end of…

  • The tombstone is complete!

    3 Nov 2009 | 10:50 am
It’s November, it’s cold, and the days are so short now! No daylight left in the evenings means one thing… I get to stitch more :D Ha!I finally, and I mean finally finished this tombstone block on the Shores of Hawk Run Hollow last night. I’ve only been working on it since AUGUST. I was on a roll with these blocks at the beginning of the year, finishing one almost every month… then summer hit… then I started working on the big ship block. But this block, it is so big! And all filled in! I am not whining, because I actually like filling it all in, it meant I didn’t have to count,…
  • Blogaversary Prize Winner!

I drew a name today from those who entered my blogaversary contest! Loraine at Sew Be It! has won!!! Yay! Congratulations Loraine. And thank you to everybody who entered, I wish I had the time to make something for each of you :) We had a fun Halloween night and the kids managed to get about 300 pounds of candy, I swear! It was great. This week was pretty productive for me on the sewing front. I managed to get 7 placemats sewn. I know... 7 is not an even number, but that was all of the scraps I had, so I've got to figure out how to give them away :D My Grandma gets at least 3 of them! It was…

  • Cindy Lou Who Schnibble Quilt

    25 Oct 2009 | 9:37 am
I finished quilt #2 for the Schnibbles a month challenge. The pattern is Cindy Lou Who, and it required 3 charm packs. I have plenty of charm packs, but none of them were giving me the look I wanted. I ended up pulling out fat quarters and yardage I've had in my stash, some of it I've used in other quilts, some I had for years, and it came together nicely! For the backing I used up a lot of the remaining fabric pieces.I am trying to use my stash for these Schnibbles, it'll be fun to see what I can come up with I think. I can't wait to see what everybody else is making from this pattern! Be…

  • Allen says it doesn’t count

    ralphy36
    12 Oct 2009 | 6:31 pm
Okay, Allen says I have to make a real post, so here it goes. It has been a quick and busy October so far. It is hard to believe that the first quarter of school is almost over and my little (or not so little)Nathaniel is six weeks away from turning two. I say not so little as when he is fussing in Joanns while you wait for one really chatty sales person to cut fabric, he turns into a ten ton giant with fists of iron and stabby feet! Well, I got what I wanted and I am not sure what I expected considering today is a sleep catch up day for him. Yesterday the fam headed out to the MD Ren Fest.

That would be me. Maybe if I was able to make a profession out of it I would be better, but life just gets in the way. This post is in honor of Allen since he complained I haven’t been blogging:) It has been a busy few months since my last post. We took a big trip in July and hit all of Nathaniel’s grandparents. In total we drove almost 1000 miles in ten days. I guess the daily average is no more than when I used to commute to Maryland, but it is a bit different when you have a screaming 20 month old in the back seat. In reality, though, Nathaniel did quite well on the trip. Allen…
  • July Goals

    1 Jul 2009 | 5:01 am
Well, I have been doing a good amount of stitching lately. I am going regularly to my Tuesday nigh stitching group which allows for at least three hours of stitching. Unfortunately the shop that originally hosted the stitching group went out of business yesterday. The stitching group will continue at local libraries and people’s homes, but it means no more stash shopping on Tuesdays and no more opportunity to use the shops stock to do a floss toss on cool fabrics or with alternate colorways of a pattern:( The only positive is that my pocketbook will not be opened for stash as often now.

It is amazing how as you get older the years go by faster and faster. I remember when I was in elementary school thinking that the year was sooooo long. Now there are times when it is not long enough. I guess that is what happens when you are busy every moment of the day. The end of February was also a blur as we were all very very sick. Nathaniel brought us home a great virus that has had us all down for the count. Here is what I have been stitching on the last few weeks…Mirabilia’s Halloween fairy. I needed something to take with me on our trip to Allen’s family over…

As long time readers of my blog know I am a Star Trek fan, ( so much so that I flew to Vegas for 24 hours just to do "The Experience") Some of you may also remember that one of my very first mentionings of this was the fact that I had "rediscovered" one of my favorite actors from ST:TNG , Wil Wheaton blogging on the internets. Since then he has published 2 more books (adding up to 4 on my shelf right now), and he has not given up acting. You may have seen him in the past few years on CSI, Numb3rs, Leverage, Criminal Minds, and Family Guy. Next week in fact he will be on Big Bang Theory.

It would have been both a part of every day life, but would also mark the special occasions and festivals in their lives. You’ll enjoy the details and beautiful images of this article. And John promises a more in-depth feature in the future. Yes! See the post.

It didn’t take us long on Amelia Island to find out about the fierce rivalry between the University of Florida and the University of Georgia. Kathy Schenkel has painted these stand up Santas with a football for the fans of each team. They are the perfect project to stitch while you watch the games this season. The big game this year is on Saturday, October 31 in Jacksonville Florida. Click on the photos for more information.

I realized a couple days ago that I never posted any Houston pics. I actually took some, too. So, without further ado….. my recent Houston trip (all pictures clickable to biggify): Mom and I flew in late Thursday eve (the 15th) and took a short cab ride to our downtown hotel (Marriott Residence Inn).  Thankfully short, because it was late (after 10pm local time) and it was a very uncomfortable cab. We got checked in and up to the spacious room.  We felt very safe given our view: Friday dawned bright and early.  We had lunch downstairs before Missy Ann came by to pick us up for the…

Kinda fell off the posting wagon, there. I am happy to say I did *not* end up with the flu.  I did have a bit of headache and fever for a couple days, but nothing that kept me from working at home. Then Thursday I had Jury Duty. It was the Best Ever!!! I didn’t have to report until 1pm and then sat and read (Lover Eternal) for a couple hours before being sent home. That is my kind of jury duty! Saturday was busy with errands (salon for mani/pedi, mammogram, used bookstore with Z, quick Hobby Lobby stop).  A friend of mine had a lovely baby girl show up on her doorstep (long story, but…

Happy Halloween!Today was Day 14 our our coast-to-coast walk. The weather report for today predicted clouds in Newcastle and rain in Carlisle. We decided to take a risk and walk, even though at this point in the journey we're closer to Carlisle than Newcastle. We were only rained on briefly, and fortunately were armed with two umbrellas, so weather-wise it turned out just fine. I found myself singing several times during the course of the day, so I think that means I enjoyed myself.Just to shake things up a bit I'll start at the end.The last thing we saw was Lanercost Priory. Yup, it's that time again! Yesterday was Day 13 of Hadrian's Wall Walk. This time, we walked from Roman Army Museum to the Birdoswald Roman Fort which was 4.5 miles. We took the train this time, as the journey is now taking over two hours on bus.The weather report said it would be dry today, but we had our doubts when we arrived at the Roman Army Museum. Our first site-seeing stop was Thirwall Castle. Built in the 14th century out of stone from Hadrian's wall by the rich family (this was a very dangerous area back then, and rich families built strong holds such as this) of Thirwall, it was later…

Yesterday we walked from Milecastle Inn, where we intended to start during our last failed attempt to walk, to the Roman Army Museum. The weather report predicted light showers at 10:00am, and seeing as we're running out of time to complete the walk we thought, armed with our new wellies, we could cope with a little rain and wind.Well, turned out to be not the greatest of decisions. We didn't actually start our walk until noon because, while we were riding on the bus, it started raining and the wind started to shake the bus (I made sure to put on my seatbelts). Thistle Cove Farm
    3 Nov 2009 | 6:39 pm
~ the place where morning gathers at Thistle Cove Farm ~ Are you familiar with Rich Mullins? He was a extremely gifted Christian song writer and musician who passed away in 1997 but left behind a legacy of music and words that are haunting in their beauty and are being sung still today. He played several instruments and was best known for his skill on the hammer dulcimer; you've probably sung his songs in worship services. Sing your Praise to the Lord and Awesome God are two of his songs. His last major work, Canticle of the Plains, was loosely based on the life of St. Francis of…

It's not that I mind it during the spring and summer but for whatever strange reason, by the time we slouch toward October, my body rhythms are totally skewed. Yesterday, I woke up and felt approaching normal; this morning I work up and felt like I was reborn and does it ever feel great! I skipped exercise class, opting to give the house more than a lick and a promise and, while I didn't finish, the start was enough to make me happy. We call the November full moon a Full Beaver Moon because there was still time to set…

~ the last of the cosmos, kissed by frost ~ Autumn is my favorite time of year, although, it's also the most difficult to make an adjustment to the changes in light and time. I know DST doesn't change until November 1, Sunday, 2 a.m. but the already shortened days confuse my cicadian rhythms and both body and mind suffer. Most folks I know who tend to land and/or animals are acclimated to the natural rhythms of the earth, sun and moon. We tend to sleep when it's dark; work when it's light and when those rhythms, cicadian rhythms, are disrupted, I tend to do stupid things. As soon as we turn…

I got 3 14 oz. cones of variegated yarn at that price. Not bad. I would have bought even more if they'd had it. (They didn't.) I can't guarantee that your local Walmart will have coned yarns on sale, or that it will even have coned yarns at all. If you're planning on making a trip there anyway, it might be worth checking the yarn aisle to see if you can find any, although I wouldn't recommend making a special trip just for…

Colorful Cotton Yarns - Photo © Amy Solovay. Think back to your childhood for a moment. Did you ever play with paints, or finger paints? You probably remember that mixing red with yellow makes orange, and mixing blue and yellow equals green. You might think that information doesn't help you much when it comes to crochet, though - you can't mix yarns in the same way that you can mix paints. Potholder - Photo © Amy Solovay. What you can do instead is use yarns together in a way that fools the eye into seeing color blends. For example, in these colorful potholders, there are rows in which you…

Seems like an oxymoron to a lot of people, myself included at times. It’s rough for me to reconcile how exceptionally cool knit patterns often are with how uncool most crochet patterns are. • A Princess and a Jaguar

    Mishka
    3 Nov 2009 | 11:34 am
I was lucky enough to spend Halloween with my nieces this year. Lucy was the prettiest princess and Alice a very cute Jaguar. It was a windy night, cold and a few sprinkles of rain, but thankfully no snow! Lucy had a fabulous time and made sure to ask everyone for candy for her baby sister Alice too.
  • Happy Halloween and Happy Birthday Baby Alice

Those that have been around the Quilting Gallery site for a year or more may remember the birth of my Alice Lynne, last Halloween. This year, I’ll be taking my nieces out trick or treating for the first time. Lucy, at 3.5 years old, is very excited to be a Princess (again!) and Alice will be a pumpkin. Here are the pumpkins my sister and Lucy made this year. I’ll post pictures of Alice’s birthday present later in the week.

  • It’s Tisket A Tasket Day!

    5 Nov 2009 | 12:01 am
Were you expecting a turkey in the basket? Well here’s the problem…I can’t appliqué a cute turkey. At least not inside a basket. Just can’t do it. You’d be asking each other “what happened at Bunny Hill?”. So, because of my turkey problem, you get a squirrel in your basket! She’s a staple here at Bunny Hill. I’ve used her in several other patterns, and there’s no doubt you’ll be seeing her again. She’s got a bushy tail and she’s plump. Pleasingly plump! And the best thing is, she’s EASY to appliqué! If you read my newsletter this morning, you already know about…
  • Diversions

    Anne Sutton
    3 Nov 2009 | 11:10 am
November has arrived can you believe it?  I’m a few days late, but I just turned over the calendar to November and let out a gasp.  It’s a short month, made even shorter with Thanksgiving.  Christmas is barreling at us full force! Are you ready? When I get too busy with projects, I have a tendency to wander off for a bit and create diversions. A really bad habit, and I admit, part of my character.  I was thinking about the newsletter I have to write, the projects I should be working on and instead,  I picked up the camera and took few shots in the studio. …
  • Orange toenails

    Anne Sutton
    31 Oct 2009 | 10:36 am
Roxie is our neighbor’s dog.  She’s a love.  Even Chelsea thinks so. Chelsea watches from the studio window and not once has Chelsea barked at Roxie.   Roxie passes all the “Chelsea” tests.  Roxie also has orange toenails… and a “bad dog” hat.  Chelsea wanted one too when she saw Roxies’s hat. She gave us the “look” we can’t resist. So Ross went on the hunt to find her a bad dog hat.  Well, when he got there, the cupboards were bare, and so the poor dog had… …A spider collar?  We’re kidding right?  Nope! I promised next…
  • Gift of Words

    Anne Sutton
    29 Oct 2009 | 3:25 pm
If, as wee babes, we could each select our own special attributes, I would have chosen the gift of words.  The ability to write what we want to say with eloquent, flowing words.  Priceless! Now, please don’t get me wrong,  I don’t think I’m “horrible” at writing, but I really have to work at it. I write and then re-write everything.  And, then sometimes I go back and write it again!  If you have a blog you probably know what I mean.  It’s not easy.  Unless you have the “gift”. As I read the article written by Patience Brewster, in the current…
  • Studio Stage One

    27 Oct 2009 | 6:27 am
Often when you change one thing it has a tornado effect.  While I was at quilt market my husband, Ross, built IKEA cubby shelves in the studio closet.   Building shelves in a closet = chaos.  Everything has to come out. Everything!  Remember that built in ironing board I had in the closet?  It’s now sitting in the center of the studio.  Hard to iron when it folds down to the floor.    And the cabinets that were calling the closet home?  They made their grand entrance into the studio and are now sitting in front of the bookshelves. …

  • My Second Handmade Knitwear

    Salihan
    1 Nov 2009 | 4:50 pm
I’ve been knitting for four years now but I’ve only just made my second knitwear. If you look at my Ravelry project page, you’ll notice that I have plenty of small knitted and crocheted projects and only one other cardigan – my February Lady Sweater, which I practically lived in this past winter. I thought it was high time I made myself another cardigan but this time, it’s for summer. I had bought 20 balls of Moda Vera Linen Mode for $1 each during Spotlight’s end of winter clearance sale last year. I tried knitting a Tonia [pattern] jumper with it but it just…
  • My Craft Space

    Salihan
    29 Oct 2009 | 4:20 pm
I have organized my craft space and I’ve kept it clean and tidy for a few weeks now. Hard to believe that my new system stood up against overly enthusiastic stash enhancement shopping sprees and even more yarn acquisition from a generous friend and the dabbling of yet another craft hobby and most importantly, “I’ve-got-a-great-idea-that-I-must-do-it-right-now!” moments! Computer workspace Ifa, my female cat, pretty much lives on the printer. The only time she gets up voluntarily is when I’m cooking or eating or when it’s her dinner time. I normally kick her…

  • Merry Christmas Lesson #2

    1 Nov 2009 | 6:08 pm
Here we go. Lesson #2 of the Merry Christmas canvas was today at the shop. We tackled a few more squares. Still many to go but this is a great way to stay on track and feel like you are accomplishing lots! Little goals do the trick. Today we did simple Long Stitch triangles in 2 of the squares. Nothing exotic, we needed an easy square to get us started today. We made a big sparkly pink snowflake. I'm convinced the world would be a better place if it snowed pink. Maybe some purple too. You may have noticed that I like bling. I also try to go for the unexpected, so rather than completely beading…
  • What a Wonderful Weekend

    29 Oct 2009 | 6:36 pm
You can not imagine how much fun we had last weekend. We had just unpacked the store and were open to welcome customers Tuesday morning. Thursday night Caela Conn Tyler came to teach 3 days of exceptional classes for us. Oh the fun! Friday we had a wonderful lecture/spontaneous painted canvas embellishment class and then Saturday and Sunday we stitched Piazza San Marco.Piazza is a gorgeous piece and so much fun to stitch. Caela has worked out all the details. All we had to do was relax and follow along on the journey. We did have to count but no one seemed to mind. We were entranced with the…
  • We're Open!

    21 Oct 2009 | 6:30 am
The new store is unpacked and ready for primetime viewing. It really is a very cool space that I think you are going to enjoy. All the stuff that made the old store so me is still here along with lots of fun new things to explore. The walls are still my funky shade of lime green that just makes everything happy. Some of the floors have tiger carpet. (More to come later) All in all a very good move. The move was especially good thanks to the help of a group of very dear friends who kicked in and went well beyond the call of duty to get us unpacked and prettied up in just 48 hours!!! You girls…
  • Merry Christmas -- Ho Ho Ho

    17 Oct 2009 | 5:59 pm
Well, where to begin. At the beginning of course... Today was the first day of our Merry Christmas Mystery Class. I know, you think I am crazy having class today when we move the store tomorrow, but it was important, so we did it. (Many of you who have ordered this class to be shipped long distance will find your supplies arriving next week. There are still some canvases to ship as I am waiting for more to arrive.)Raymond Crawford designed this canvas and it is charming. It's my mission to kick it up a notch. You know, add a little bling. We started with the borders which I wanted to be a…
  • Not So Mellow Yellow

    11 Oct 2009 | 5:54 am
I just had to share. Sue has been taking my Mellow Yellow Mystery Class at the shop but made one major change....the background. We picked a different stitch and different threads so that the background could be changed from pink to black. I've included this option in the stitchguide so that others can change too. Everything else is pretty much the same as on mine.It looks great! It makes all the colors pop! One small change can change the feel of the entire piece. It's off to the finisher so we'll have new pictures when it returns. Mellow Yellow and Not So Mellow Yellow..... Oh what fun!
