Madeleine L'Engle wrote more than 60 books during her lifetime and is one of my favorite authors. She wrote young adult fiction and is particularly known for the book A Wrinkle in Time (I have probably read that book about 100 times) which is part of the Time Quartet. Other fictional series include the adventures of the Austin family and the companion books A Small Rain and A Severed Wasp. L'Engle also wrote autobiographical books, poetry, and more. Quilt or Stitch? How about both?

Only one more border to go...Last week, I had to miss my Portland Quilt Guild meeting, which made me so sad.  I had a nasty head cold I was just getting over, and thought it’d be rude to share it with my friends.  So, instead of attending the meeting, I sewed.  I worked on Stella Blue again! Since I added a 1” border around the top, I had to change the flying geese border a bit.  After some fudging, and making the corner block a bit different, I made it all work.  I think it looks okay, but I am not taking it out!So, now all that is left is the big blue 5”…

My friend Stacy is due to have a baby at the end of February, and her friend and I hosted a baby shower for her on Saturday.  She is having a girl *yay!!* and we are all really excited for her.I decided to make her a bright and happy baby quilt.  I had fun going through my stash to find the perfect fabric.  I used a pattern from the magazine Quilt Sampler, Summer 2011.  To make a baby quilt, I just used less blocks.  I really liked this pattern, it went together easily and looks nice too.I used an aqua dot flannel for the backing, and bound it with more dots, one can…

I started a new quilt!  I know, bug surprise huh??  When I went to the Sisters Quilt Show in July of last year with all of my girlfriends, we stopped at The Stitchin' Post in Sisters and went shopping.  I walked out with this lovely stack of shot cottons and cross weaves for a quilt from the book City Quilts.  This quilt reminds me of the sea, the colors are so soothing.I finally started cutting into them, and I am in love.I have never made a quilt out of all solids before, so this is a lot of fun!

I am glad to hear some of you are interested in how the glue works for sewing curved seams!  I’ll be putting a post together for that soon, so be on the lookout okay?Stella Blue has been on my table all week, and she is becoming quite pretty.  First of all, I had a successful shopping trip to Hollyhill Quilt Shoppe last Saturday.  They still had some Rural Jardin fabric, but I kind of wanted something different for the borders.  I knew that Etchings by Moda would match quite well, and knew they had that line in too.  I totally scored!  One of the ladies who…

In my quest to be a better quilter, I started the Single Girl quilt last spring.  There were a bunch of people doing a sew along, and I figured I'd jump in because I loved the pattern, and I'd have lots of help and ideas with curved seams.I started off full steam ahead, got lots of piecing done, and then slammed into a wall when it came time to actually sew the curved pieces together.  I didn't like all of the pinning, holy cow!  I got poked like crazy... and I didn't like how it would never lay flat for me.I put the project away, and pulled out a whole lot of other ones to…

I had done so well at keeping up with blogging daily for a while:) My nephew came over for a sleepover this weekend so that threw getting anything productive done (other than playing) impossible. The boys were so well behaved and had so much fun. I really wish we lived closer to my sister and her family so the kids could have play dates more often. Our kids are very close in age, the boys are a year apart and the girls are four months apart. Nathaniel and Ethan are really good friends and hopefully the girls will enjoy hanging out just as much. So here is an update on my blogging challenge.

SO, our visitor arrived after 10:30 PM. MAN, it threw my schedule way off as we did not eat supper until we got home from the airport. Last weekend I went to the Big Apple to attend Vogue Knitting Live! It's an amazing event with lots of classes, and a market that is so big it has to be on two floors!   I had a booth that included all my products for sale and what a hoot to be able to be there and talk to everyone that stopped by!  *all images clickable* The dude on the left looks spookily like my brother, and I had to make him take a photo. The entire weekend I would look up and jump because I kept thinking my big bro was there! The next photo is from the Where Women Create booth where they had the pages from my…

  • Yarn review: Heritage Silk

    4 Jan 2012 | 9:28 am
Just before the holidays I was sent some yarn that I had never worked with before. It's from Cascade Yarns out of Seattle Washington.  You may have worked with Cascade 220 before, it's an amazing worsted weight wool that comes in array of colors. It's truly hard to beat the color selection. The yarn I've been working with is called Heritage Silk:Turns out that this is a wonderful lightweight yarn. The 85% superwash wool is soft and easy to crochet with, and the 15% mulberry silk gives it a very pretty sheen and I believe adds to the lovely drape. This yarn is produced in Peru.I'm very…

For Christmas jolly ole St. Nicholas brought me a new lens for my Nikon. It's an AF-S Micro Nikkor 85mm which is really just a fancy way of saying that it takes photos up close. Last year I felt like The Crochet Dude needed an upgrade from a point and shoot camera to an entry level SLR. Costco had the Nikon D5000 for a great price and I snapped (ha ha) it up. When I used my little point and shoot up until last year it had a built in 'macro' setting and took amazing photos like this one:Cleo says "click me" When I tried to get my new fancy Nikon to take up close pictures they never came out,…

Last year on New Year's Day I was so busy working on Hug It Out that I didn't have time to blog, or take a shower or anything like that. I didn't get a chance to even think about resolutions or goals for the year.  I had my reasons, but nonetheless, I am happy that I am just sitting in my little studio with Miss Chandler staring at me this year.As I sit here thinking about what resolutions to make (sometimes they help!) or what quality to develop (every party needs a theme!) I just wish I were more efficient. I wish the little things didn't take so much effort, and indeed I don't think…

which makes 9 octagons left to do, 16 squares and 18 triangles. This sounds like a LOT,  but it shouldn’t take too long. Because I have so many of the octagons, I am tossing up whether I want to start joining them together now, or waiting until all the bits are finished. I’m liking the idea of getting the rows done before all the fiddly bits. But..what color do I sew them together with? Ah, the pattern says main color. That’s handy, coz that was about the color I was thinking of using. If you wanted to do this using cheapish acrylic, these are the ‘recommended’…

For my shoot with Caleb, I crocheted a new prop that I now don’t think I could do without: a diaper cover! I used the pattern from this site and just enlarged it a little bit (because I find that my crochet creations often turn out too small).  This little prop was so easy to make and worked really well in my photos.  It is a comfy and easy way to mask whatever brightly-colored cartoon character you find stamped all over your little model’s diaper
