Quilt Class with Sandy Klop
Quilt or Stitch? How about both?3 May 2012 | 8:42 pmSo, I haven’t taken a formal quilting class before. Mark and my friend Barbara really pushed me to take this class. I had so many excuses not to do it, with young kids, life is busy!! However, friends helped out and took my kids for the weekend so I didn’t have to worry about them, and I could just relax. I love good friends! So, let me first start off by saying Hollyhill had a great classroom setting, lots of room, lots of light. There were only 10 of us in this class, which I heard was a small class size for them. Sandy Klop is adorable, I… -

Pink Carnation and Saying Cross Stitch Design
14 May 2012 | 1:00 amOliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (1809 - 1894) was an American poet who was regarded by his peers as one of the best writers of the 19th century. The quote used in this design is attributed to him. The simple floral design uses a limited color palette that may be adapted to fit your decor. In addition to the saying design, a trio of the floral motifs is included in the pattern set for your stitching pleasure. Free Mirrored Roses Cross Stitch Design
13 May 2012 | 1:00 amRoses are popular flowers and this one may be stitched in any shade you like. It's perfect for celebrating Mother's Day today! I chose a rosy shade of pink, but you might prefer yellow or pink. My mom has a wide variety of roses in her yard and I am always amazed at the variety of colors her plants exhibit. And the names! The names are as lovely as the flowers. My favorite are the Knock-Out Roses - mainly because they really are so beautiful that they will knock you out! And, because they make me think of boxing. Free Column Two Cross Stitch Pattern
12 May 2012 | 1:00 amThe Column Pattern Collection is a great pattern for practicing whole cross stitches, tension, and also for trying out a floss new-to-you. Like the rest, Column Two is a single color, so it would also look magnificent on a piece of hand-dyed fabric or done in a variegated floss.Design © Connie G. Dash away All, Christmas in April
24 Apr 2012 | 9:00 amI'm on a Christmas kick apparently. I recently finished my Holiday Happy quilt, and now I finished my Dash Away All cross stitch! This went really quick, which I appreciated. I worked on it a lot while watching my son do Taekwondo. The repetative pattern made it easy peasy.I've had this in my stash for a long time, and I was happy to finally make it.The chart is by Henzeit, and the kit came with the fabric and bells, I chose threads from my stash of lovely overdyed threads. My fave part? Bitty Treat Bags
14 Apr 2012 | 10:48 amSo Easter was going to happen, and at church I work with the Young Women (12-18 year olds). I really wanted to make them something, but to make 20-somethings can be difficult right? I settled on the Small Treat Totes that Miss Monica of the Happy Zombie designed. It takes 2 fat quarters to make 4 bags, and I had fun pulling fabrics for this project. So here they are 20 super cute adorable Easter gifties. I filled them with grass and candy :-)The girls loved them, yay!! And in other news, I finished my pillow, sorry it is wrinkled a bit, we have been using it!

First Needlepoint!
6 Oct 2011 | 10:37 amSo this past summer on vacation in Charleston I was very excited to visit Keep 'em in Stitches a LNS located in nearby Summerville, SC. The last time I was there in 2005 it was a lively place full of people, the store was hosting a trunk show by Cindy Valentine, and had the latest cross stitch stuff out of Nashville. This time however, I walked in to a empty (of people) and dusty store. I was *not* greeted by a cobwebby old woman in an easy chair I had no idea if she was a customer or a proprietor ( I later found out was the owner's mother). I wandered around abit…

What to do on a stormy day???
14 May 2012 | 8:46 pmHere's what I did :) I spent all day with floss. It has stormed here all day long so I took advantage of the weather and dyed floss for the best part of the morning. Then the drying process and then putting it all on floss tags. I love how they all came out. I dyed 100 skeins today :) I am loving it :)AND, I have just the smallest start on a new design. I started it just a few minutes ago :) This one is from the Loose Feathers Summer leaflet too and I LOVE the design so much and look forward to stitching it. I didn't have a fabric I was happy with for this one so I dyed my own :)Design:… -

Needlepoint System 4 Accesories

Kathy writes “The System 4 Light Holder attaches quickly anywhere on the upper arm of your System 4 floor stand to provide a base for the magnifier scope and light. The magnifier provides 3 diopters worth of magnification with a halogen light (shielded) so seeing where your needle is supposed to go and where it is actually going becomes wonderfully clear. Mother's Day 2012
13 May 2012 | 9:36 amAh Mother's Day, what a bittersweet holiday this is. If we still have our moms with us, do we love and forgive, and if we have lost our moms do we remember with joy and happiness? My mom passed in 1998 and each year I have struggled less and less with this decision. I now can easily go right to the joy and happiness of her ever-present memories and not focus too much on the loss and separation that death tries to pin our relationship. Montage of Mom I put together with "Mood Boards" on my iPad Often since starting this blog in 2005 I have awoken on Mother's Day and written some sort of… -

Life Like Water, Stepping on Shadows
14 May 2012 | 8:59 pmOnce the wintery mix stopped, it began raining and it's rained and rained and rained and...it's still raining. We've had a few hours of sunshine in the last couple of weeks but, at the moment, can't really remember when. Perhaps last week...? A lot of rain isn't conducive to a positive mental attitude; at least, it's not for me. An Overwhelming Kindness
10 May 2012 | 9:09 pmDang. No photos due to some kind of computer or blogger glitch; oh well, it is what it is. The last two weeks plus have been overwhelming in a variety of ways. As Andy Griffith said, "It rained and it rained and it rained...it was a real frog strangler!" It's been raining for about the last eight days and, not to disrespect God or anything like that, I'm a mite tad tard of rain. As they would say around here -smile-. A couple of new creations!
15 May 2012 | 12:30 pmBeen a bit quiet on here haven’t I?! Sorry! Been a bit lazy and I’m going to use the excuse of baby growing I have been busy with a couple of craft projects though! The first was a cross stitch.. I’ve made a few cards in this kind of design and thought it would make a cool cross stitch, so I got some graph paper and designed my pattern and away I went! I’m so chuffed with how its turned out!! I’ve considered selling the chart but unsure if there would be enough interest? If you would like it please comment or email miawebb@me.com Next project was a summer… -

Another Tuesday
15 May 2012 | 12:10 pmIt has been a quiet week so far. I apologize for not updating sooner. It’s been rainy and dreary for the past three days, and I’ve spent much of those sitting quietly and crocheting a table runner. That has been punctuated by the usual chores, meal preparation and animal care. Prior to the rain showers, I was biking to Jenny’s twice a day, and Mom has started accompanying me sometimes on Steve’s old bike. After sitting in the barn for 6 years unused, all it needed was new inner tubes and some slight adjustments. I also managed to blow out the front tire on my bike, by… -
Fungus Among Us
15 May 2012 | 11:59 amThis past week was a week of completing things! It feels good to finally reach the finish line on several items. One of those projects was the Mushroom Sculpture for the Highland Park Art Center’s Magic Garden Exhibit. Throughout the summer several blocks in downtown Highland Park, Illinois are transformed into a Magical Garden with colorful sculptures of butterflies, peacocks, dragonflies and yes giant mushrooms! Last Thursday was the grand opening celebration and it was a beautiful afternoon for the unveiling of nearly 50 artist made creations. Click to view slideshow. I was… -
Slowing Down
15 May 2012 | 11:33 amI have two more amigurumi ducks now available in my Etsy shop! I’ll eventually learn new shapes and patterns, but for now, I’m on a personal quest to make as many ducks of different shapes and sizes in amigurumi! I’ve actually had to slow down with the crocheting over the past few days, I started to get a little pain in the middle of my left forearm the other day and I’m fairly certain that it’s from all of the crocheting I’ve been doing. Many years ago I injured both wrists with DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis, so I’m especially mindful of anything…

Top 100 Picture Books #94: The Mitten by Jan Brett
16 May 2012 | 12:13 amAs insane as it sounds, this is Ms. Brett's first appearance on one of our polls.A Prolific and still going strong she first came to my attention due to her knitting.A Some authors just throw stuff together and clearly don't care to show every stitch in a sweater.A Brett isn't like them.A The whole reason this book works as well as it does is that ... Tuesday’s Knitting Tip – How to Knit Clean Stripes in Ribbing
15 May 2012 | 7:20 pmThanks to Liz for providing such a simple, yet elegant knitting tip on how to deal with messy looking stripes in ribbing.I learned this trick while taking a class at WEBS. I don’t think I’ll ever forget it as it is super simple and it yields great results. If you’ve ever changed colors while knitting ribbing, you’ve no doubt noticed the unfortunate thing that happens in the purl columns. The purl bumps of one color end up showing through in the fabric of the other color, and it creates an unfortunate zig-zagging line. The good news is that there is an easy fix for… -

Father’s Day Gifts: Great Handmade Projects to Knit and Crochet for Him
15 May 2012 | 8:00 amFather’s Day is just a month away, which means you still have time to pick out and make the perfect gift! With these tips and pattern ideas to choose from, you’ll be way ahead of the game when it comes to Father’s Day gift-giving. Tips to remember: Tip #1: Take a look at what he already wears. Chances are that the man you’ll be crafting for already has an idea of the sort of knit and crochet projects he likes to wear or use. Gauge Swatch 101: How to Make and Measure Your Swatch
14 May 2012 | 8:00 amI admit it: I used to cheat at gauge swatches. I would cast on, work a few rows, then assume I was good to go. Of course, my projects never came out the right size (and I have the ill-fitting sweaters to prove it)! Since then, I’ve decided that I prefer sweaters that fit, so now I’m a believer in the gauge swatch. Not only does a swatch help you measure your gauge, but it also gives you the chance to practice your stitches and see how your project will drape. Are you ready to swatch now? Here’s how to make and measure your swatch in 5 easy steps. Step 1: Cast on using the… -

Coned Yarns and Their Crazy Numbers + New Videos!
25 Apr 2012 | 11:16 amThis lovely, coned wool is value priced at only $19 a pound! Coned yarns provide good value. If you compare, often ounce for ounce coned yarns are less expensive than those found on balls or skeins. Think of it as bulk buying. The put-up is easier for the manufacture and they get to sell more yarn. We often get asked if there a difference between coned yarns and other put-ups. The answer is yes and no. Often yarn found on cones is made for weavers. The yarn may have a harder twist and the manufacturer may leave a little spinning oil on the yarn so that it will hold up under the… -

6 May 2012 | 1:43 pmAnother new colorway in the Purldiver Collection has just been launched by A Good Yarn! Our newest Purldiver collection yarn is called Fit for a Queen Angelfish. The wall is an underwater ledge that starts at Little Cayman Island and stretches the length of the entire island chain. It is a… -

Butterflies and Sweet Lips
19 Mar 2012 | 2:15 pmA Good Yarn is happy to introduce the two newest colorways in our Purl Diver Collection! The inspiration for the first of our two newest colors in the Purl Diver collection, Butterfly, came from this picture of a Pyramid Butterfly Fish, taken with my son Michael in the Solomon Islands. Unlike most butterfly fish that stay close to the reef and are usually seen singly or in pairs, this species spends most of its time swimming in open water, where it captures zooplankton blown about at the mercy of the current. This makes them more susceptible to predators, so they are more often found in…
