I have officially become middle-aged. I can still see to read just fine, but suddenly my arms just weren't the right length where my stitching was concerned. My prescription is very strong as it is - now my up-close vision is iffy. What's a serious stitcher to do?In an effort to avoid going to using only 6-count Aida for my projects, I have tried all sorts of magnifiers. I am too fidgety for the ones that fit around the neck, but if I get in the zone, I can make them work. Free-standing magnifiers tend to give me motion-sickness, so while they offer a great view of my stitching, I can't use…

    5 Feb 2010 | 10:00 pm
Cross Stitch Forum members discussed a new source of great free patterns suitable for Cross Stitch recently. I soon realized that the site they referred to was About.com Needlepoint. I enjoy browsing through Cheryl's designs too, so I wanted to make sure that everyone was aware of them. Especially since most Needlepoint designs are easily adapted for Cross Stitch since they are based on a grid too. © Cheryl FallOne of her recent designs, the free Bird of Pardise design is an example of Cheryl's use of color. 6 Feb 2010 | 4:55 pm
So far this weekend has been great! On Friday night I watched Julie and Julia, and it was fantastic! Have you all seen it? If not, please do, you will be glad you did. It really made me laugh. I stayed home with Jessie on Friday. She has been sick with a bad cough all week and by Friday she looked so exhausted. We had a nice day together playing the Wii and making these cards. I am not taking credit for the awesome-ness of them. I got the idea from Cluck Cluck Sew! Aren't they too cute? We made about a dozen of them for our teachers and family. Here is Jessie sewing her heart out.Today we…
  • Spring Stars Quilt Top

    4 Feb 2010 | 8:35 am
After writing my post on Tuesday with the list of things to look forward to, I felt better. I also went and took some sunshine pills, AKA Vitamin D. You know what? I felt so much better after that. So, I am in a different frame of mind now, and I am glad. I just can’t stand it when I feel down. Yesterday after work, I sat down and started working on my spring star quilt. I needed to get the top done so I could put it out at church on Sunday and people could sign up to make it. I finished the top! It took about 3 hours to sew it all together, all of the blocks were already done. It felt good…

I am glad that it is February, it means we are that much closer to March and spring. Winter in Portland is not very pleasant. It’s constantly overcast and raining. It kind of depresses me and so, I have been just feeling *blah* Do you ever get that way? I am in "feel sorry for myself mode." Here are the few things I’ve made progress on in the past week.First up: Shores of Hawk Run, the last block. The fishes are going to take awhile, but it’s getting there! I need to get more movies to watch so I can finish this up…Second up: The Spring Star quilt I am working on for quilt class. I…

Current state of Grand Old Duke ( When i abbreviated it in Flickr as GOD, I thought coincidence? ) Mylene, he looks bigger in the model (i think it was 14 count) but I am doing him on 22 ct fabric...so he won't be much bigger than 5 x7.  And yes he will be all filler once the black outlining/detailing is done...I am just trying not to burn out on it .  so I alternate stitching on him and the baby sampler:It is not going as fast as I hoped, but i swear it will be done by Annabeth's 3rd birthday.   The original pattern is found at Kissy-Cross, but it is no longer available unless…

Brown Paper Packages has just released 4 new colors in Silk & Ivory (and Trio). There are 3 new warm grays (not green-gray, not blue-gray) in the new Pearl Gray family. Pewter is the lightest, Smoky Quartz is the medium gray and Onyx is the darkest. These grays remind me of the finest menswear pinstriped wools. The fourth color is Straw—it shades lighter than Saffron. It’s a good blond color and Straw describes it perfectly. All four are in stock in both our stores and on our website.

I found them and gave one a try on Neon Rays, Shimmer Blend ribbon floss and Shimmer. I was skeptical, but I have to say the Zapper really does the trick. Working on the blanket on my elephant, I was using Neon Rays and Shimmer Blend floss. The Zapper cut the thread like a hot knife through butter and the threads did not shred! I actually enjoyed using these threads. It even makes Renaissance threads behave! This is a great little gift and a wonderful addition to a stitcher’s tool…

And it really did make washing dishes a lot more amusing. I used these instructions for making the apron.

I finally bought a tuner for the ukulele! I am very happy about my purchase because I was having to tune the uke using a YouTube tuning video about once a week, really annoying and time consuming and probably not very accurate. I've been trying to learn my first non-folk song, the ukelized version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, though I think I'm several weeks away from a sharable video.Only one finished project this week - a lunch box for J. I still can't sew straight, but it didn't really matter for this project.Almost finished that sock I started last month, in fact I would have finished…

We had beautiful weather this weekend. Cold, of course, but sharp and clear and lovely.Perfect weather to finally visit the Edinburgh Farmers Market. It was actually bigger than I thought it would be, though different from outdoor markets that I'm used too - a large portion of stalls being meat-related. Game, venison, boar. And although I'm cooking meat in my new cooking class (today's meat was bacon), I'm still not ready to buy from a specialist meat monger. For the complete opposite reason (knowing I'd go buying crazy) I also wouldn't let myself get close to the cheese stall. We did however…

Happy Friday! No classes today, so I spent a good chunk of the day crafting (it helped that I didn't turn the computer on until 2pm). The first thing I did today was make a cell phone caddy. Basically I wanted to make something that would give a little padding between the phone and the floor in case the wake-up alarm wakes up the neighbors. It's one of the least attractive things I've made in a while. But, at least I have a few excuses.1. I haven't done Tunisian Crochet in about two years 2. I didn't have instructions on how to do Tunisian Crochet in front of me, hence not realizing that…

Yesterday was Burns Night. We celebrated by eating some piping hot (it burns ...) vegetarian haggis, which was very good, and reciting, and listening to, some of Burns' poetry in the comfort our home.Yesterday was also the first session of a cooking class I'm taking, and also the first time I've cooked chicken in my adult life. It was a very informal class, essentially a bunch of people in front of stoves making the "same" dish. Yesterday's dish was a fruity-lentil- chicken curry. I think the teacher felt a little sorry for me when I told her it was the first time I've cooked chicken, and…

    20 Jan 2010 | 11:28 pm
I’ve been joining one swap after the other on Swap-bot, and just started getting into some more creative ones. Store-bought postcards are nice and all, and definitely easy to send, but I wanted to go a bit further. Further than even handmade envelopes (those are too easy for me). The first big one for me was a swap about hand-carved stamps; you make one, you get one. I’ve made my own rubber stamps before, though usually of images from Japanese rubber stamp books, but, for some reason, it was a challenge to do it this time around. It’s just been so long since I’ve made…

A few months ago, I found this gorgeous paper at Paper Source (this image from the manufacturer doesn’t do it justice), and didn’t want to pass it up. I wasn’t entirely sure what I’d do with it, but I bought 2 sheets, with the intention of covering a notebook or something. Finally, this week, I got around to using this lovely paper, and I did in fact cover a notebook with it. Just a cheap notebook from Daiso, with smooth, white pages, so it was a sort of upgrade. I added a label from Paper Source and some white vinyl tape over the binding, and it was done! It was super…

I’ve been working along on my “nengajo,” or New Year’s Day postcards, and have scanned them in batches. I would have made more, but I haven’t been feeling entirely well over the last few days, so I had to take it easy. Here’s the first batch, finished on Friday:    And the second batch, finished last night:    I want to mix up the colors more, but this is how they’ve worked out so far. My dining room table is covered in all sorts of paper and crafting supplies, and I’ve been trying my hand at making postcards again. I saw some lovely ones done by Dumpsterdiversanonymous and wanted to play around, but I’m not entirely happy with the results so far. Here’s the first one, a combination of an old Family Circle magazine from the 60s, as well as a bit of an ad from a Japanese booklet of local businesses. I wish I’d done the circle stickers vertically instead, but so it goes. I let that sit for a bit, and then came up with an idea to make postcards for New…

Big things are happening in the Ravelry Pattern Store! • as of today, 191,000 patterns have been purchased on Ravelry, totalling sales of…   $1,250,000 USD • 98.7% of the money from these sales has gone to the designers Those numbers are really incredible to us - that’s an amazing amount of support that the Ravelry community has given to the designers offering patterns using the service. During busy times of day, people buy 4 patterns every minute using the Ravelry pattern sales service, and with about 50 new patterns available as Ravelry downloads each day,…

  • Quilt Haiti

    9 Feb 2010 | 1:56 am
By: Tammy Gilley Quilts were meant for sharing. I’ve been noodling about quilts. Women who make them. Women who need them. Quilts, especially those that are handcrafted, are really just a giant hug for anyone who wraps one around herself. Perhaps by stitching quilts, we’re comforting ourselves, too, because the whole concept of what has happened in Haiti is overwhelming. And sending a check helped me for a day or so. Then I grew antsy. So, I stitched. And I thought. I’d like to do a "quilt drive", for lack of a better term, and get quilts to the women, children,…

Of course, there’s quilter’s help, quilter’s chat, and a place to post your finished quilts too. I’ve also created forums specifically for promoting quilter’s give-aways, free quilting projects and tutorials and quilting shows and events. • Studio Envy!!

    4 Feb 2010 | 6:21 am
Hi, I’m Barbara Wilson from the Thimble Pleasures (Chapel Hill, NC) blog "Hot Flashes". It’s great to be a Guest Blogger! Our shop’s blog gets lots of comments on anything to do with quilt studio design and organization. So, I thought I would share some of our ideas with you! After years of quilting on the kitchen table and having to clean up every night, I had studio envy! So, I took the plunge and decided to convert a bedroom into a quilting studio. It’s not a large space and I quickly realized that I needed a plan to be certain I could do all my quilting…

  • Linen

    Anne Sutton
    10 Jan 2010 | 2:02 pm
I’ve got this “thing” with linen lately.  Well, not lately, I guess I’ve always had it.  But now that  French General linen is available from Moda I’m a bit more obsessed than I was before.  I love linen and I’ve spent the weekend with it! I made myself a linen heart sachet to hang in the studio.  Something simple.  Something linen.  It’s hanging on a wall next to my computer, from an old window.  And then I made a new prototype bunny from my pattern “Five For Brunch”.  She’s linen of course and I gave her lop ears.  I…

  • Welcome 2010!

    Anne Sutton
    31 Dec 2009 | 9:47 pm
I really thought 2009 would bring a new addition to the studio.  It was such a good idea, adding on an extra 400 square ft. of working space.   I began to doubt it several months ago, when plans failed to arrive, deadlines weren't met, and frustrations began to build.  When the plans finally arrived, and the bids came in, the cost was outrageous.  Seems California will never change.  Things here cost more.  We haven’t learned a thing.  It’s a crazy business this one called construction.  Crazy.  So we’ve said no to the addition with…
  • Christmas Day

    27 Dec 2009 | 7:01 pm
Christmas day brought turkey, stuffing and those oh so good mashed potatoes.   My son Doug and his fiancé Elke arrived from Germany on Christmas Eve.   Luggage was lost, but the Christmas spirit was not.  Lufthansa delivered the lost luggage to our house 6PM Christmas day!  They tried really hard to get it here, and we live a good hour 1/2 from the airport!    The Christmas table was set by Doug and Elke.  The table cloth is a gift made by my friend Barbara, who blanket stitched trees, reindeer and Santa's around the border!   And, next…

    7 Feb 2010 | 12:44 pm
Since Olly claimed my WIP* box as his a few weeks ago, he has settled right in and shows no sign of moving out. You will find his furry little chin hanging over the top of the box almost every single hour of every single day. He made it purrfectly clear to me that I had to find a new box for my knitting projects. This is Olly’s box now. While wondering through Kmart in search of a replacement, I chanced upon this. Look closely at the white tag on the box… Eureka! I’ve got my new knitting WIP box! I parted with my $10 far too quickly and excitedly for the under-enthusiastic…
  • Donating to Doctors Without Borders

    4 Feb 2010 | 2:00 pm
Thank you to those who purchased my crochet patterns in January. 50% of last month’s Ravelry sales was donated to MSF ‘Doctors without Borders’ to help provide care in devastated Haiti. I can only pray that my small contribution will help those who are still desperately waiting for medical attention. Photo by Inside Disaster I’m also gobsmacked to hear that knitters around the world has helped Yarn Harlot raise over $1,000,000 for MSF since she started ‘Knitters Without Borders’ in 2004. What an accomplishment! What a true inspiration! You can read more…

I heard of Lisa’s One World, One Heart through my good friend, Cath. She told me of this great event where creative bloggers all around the world get to connect with each other, bloggers who may not normally meet. I jumped on the bandwagon like she did as it’s such a great opportunity to make new friends, don’t you think? So if this is your first time here, I welcome you to my little corner of the blogoshphere where I write about things I love. I hope to make you smile, hopefully laugh a little, even if it’s just a giggle. Let me also take this opportunity to tell you…
  • “Forever” Blanket

    Salihan
    31 Jan 2010 | 3:36 pm
I’ve wanted to crochet a blanket for a few years now. I want this blanket to stay with us forever. I want it made of the softest of soft yarn in the prettiest of pretty colours. However there were things holding me back, mostly money and time commitment. I started a hexagon blanket with scratchy, squeeky acrylic yarn last year but I didn’t finish it. It just wasn’t what I wanted and it felt like a compromise. I didn’t love the hexagon blanket like I hoped I would with my forever blanket. In a twist of fate, I started working for Ecoyarns on a part-time basis a few…

  • Tips for Paper-Piecing Quilt Blocks

    17 Jan 2010 | 6:18 pm
I finished my Fall Swap wall hanging and will have it in the mail by the deadline. YEAH! I wanted to use a pattern that allowed me to incorporated all the great fall colors. I selected a paper-piecing pattern from Bright and Bold Paperpieced Blocks by Carol Doak because her patterns use - obviously - bright and bold colors. Perfect. The patterns also have a kaleidoscope look, which appealed to me. I have never had luck with paper-piecing because the instructions I had were not very clear. I wasted a lot of fabric guessing what size to cut my pieces, and I had various other issues trying to…

  • Cute Patterns in Amigurumi Too! by Ana Paula Rimoli

    9 Jan 2010 | 9:58 am
I am still enthralled with amigurumi. For my niece’s third birthday, I crocheted more of the little critters in Ana Paula Rimoli’s book Amigurumi World and the birthday cake. I loved making up these patterns so much, that I purchased Rimoli’s second book Amigurumi Too! I crocheted this tea set from the second book over the holidays. I love how it turned out. The little spoons and chocolate chips really make the set. After today, however, I am getting back to my quilting. I joined the Fall Quilt Swap on Quiltinggallery.com. I decided to give paper piecing another try. My first attempt…
  • Amigurumi World and Panda Crochet Along

I've been away in amigurumi-land again. Making these little crocheted animals is addictive. I just cannot get enough. I have wanted to make every critter in Ana Paula Rimoli's book Amigurumi World: Seriously Cute Crochet.I have a pretty good start, too. These guys are easy, quick, and I think the cutest out there. There are instructions for large amis, but I like the little guys. This book is well worth checking out. Also, I've joined a Crochet Along. This is a new experience for me. I know how to crochet, so I was not sure if I would get anything good out of crocheting with other people, but…

  • What a difference a color makes

    29 Jan 2010 | 5:42 am
Wow, what a difference. This summer a group of us stitched Melissa Shirley's Mellow Yellow canvas as the very first Mystery Class at Bedecked and Beadazzled. It was so much fun, and I love my finished purse. But wow, what a difference a color change can make! A friend of mine stitched the background of hers in black. That was the only color change. We did a different stitch in the background to cover the pink paint more thoroughly, but that's it. Everything else is exactly the same. It is stunning! She's seeing it here first as she was gracious enough to let me photograph and post before she…
  • What a class

    24 Jan 2010 | 5:40 pm
Today was the first day of our Melissa Shirley Mystery Class. I think I surprised a few people with the choices I made for how to stitch this canvas. Here's the canvas before we began embellishing it.And here it is after lesson #1's stitching is complete.I hope you can see the subtle details, because it is really cool. Ultimately, I want this heart to be rich and dramatic —— a sparkling jewel of golds and roses. We began by attaching sequins in the background of the design area. The only challenge here is that we are using invisible thread and invisible thread really is invisible. Now for…

  • Sometimes Enough is not Enough

    10 Jan 2010 | 5:37 pm
Our Merry Christmas Mystery Class came to an end today. And while I will miss all of you dear friends and the fun we have had, I'm excited to be sending it off to the finisher. This piece is singularly the best time I have had stitching anything to date. How's that for a big statement. Today we tackled the center square. The background is a pretty open stitch and must be completed first before the letters. What to do with letters that are this thin? We could Tent Stitch them, but then we would have jagged edges on many of the curves. We could Cross Stitch them which would even everything out.
