Quilting along
17 Nov 2009 | 10:36 pmThe weekend was kind of nice for me. I was able to quilt all day. It was not nice for Mark however. He got to install wood floors and a dishwasher all day. I watched it progress, and was so impressed. Mark did a beautiful job! Here is a peek. We have lots more work to do to the room, but the floors are amazing. I love my handy hubby :) While he labored away I made the Picnic Schnibbles quilt. I don't know if I am in love with it or not, there may be too much white in it? It's cute, but it has got to grow on me. Tonight I worked on finishing the blocks for the Victorian Garden quilt. Yes, this… -
A little Etsy love
11 Nov 2009 | 8:46 amHey all! Have you visted the Etsy website at all? I am sure most of you have, and I am an addict. I love looking through home made items, people are so brilliant and creative, it's like an online art gallery. Well, I was found a really neat feature on their site, you pick a color from their rainbow and images that match the color show up on the screen, it's so FUN! Anyway, you have to go and play with it. I am trying to get some ideas for gifts this year. I think I'll be shopping at Etsy almost exclusively :) Have fun you guys!I ordered my "Picnic" pattern yesterday, and I hope to get it over… -

The tombstone is complete!
3 Nov 2009 | 10:50 amIt’s November, it’s cold, and the days are so short now! No daylight left in the evenings means one thing… I get to stitch more :D Ha!I finally, and I mean finally finished this tombstone block on the Shores of Hawk Run Hollow last night. I’ve only been working on it since AUGUST. I was on a roll with these blocks at the beginning of the year, finishing one almost every month… then summer hit… then I started working on the big ship block. But this block, it is so big! And all filled in! I am not whining, because I actually like filling it all in, it meant I didn’t have to count,… -

And thank you to everybody who entered, I wish I had the time to make something for each of you :) We had a fun Halloween night and the kids managed to get about 300 pounds of candy, I swear! I know... 7 is not an even number, but that was all of the scraps I had, so I've got to figure out how to give them away :D My Grandma gets at least 3 of them! It was…

Best/Worst weekend ever
11 Nov 2009 | 10:09 amPigeon Forge HaulOriginally uploaded by Stitching scientist It has taken me 3 days to recover from this past weekend and post for you. Now let me tell you why. I decided several weeks ago to get in on the annual pigeon forge retreat hosted by Katrina over at Crossed Threads. I got my mom to come down and watch A. so I could go. I thought I could get out of my friday obligations at work and leave early in order to have a whole 2 days up in the mountains to stitch. It all began to fall apart about a week before I left, I found out that I had misread my schedule and that we had an anatomy… -

Tutorial: Embroidered cell-phone corset
21 Nov 2009 | 3:12 pmThe Urban Threads newsletter tips us off: A couple months ago Karline got a new cell phone, and of course, she wanted to make a spiffy case for it. Here’s what she came up with — the oh-so-schmexy cell phone corset! It’s lined with microfiber to pamper the screen, and it laces up the back just like a person-corset. If you love the look of corsets but are a little daunted by the idea of making the real deal (especially in the midst of crafty-gift-giving season), try making a miniature one! It goes together pretty quickly, and the grommets and lacing are a surefire way to make… -

One item matched (well, mostly) the items in the other four packages. And the recipient of the box, is the one that started my creativity flowing with a simple comment in an email exchange…. Soup to Nuts
12 Nov 2009 | 3:42 pmI’m still plugging away on Halloween stitching (clickable): I’m down to my favorite section. The haunted house I’m going to stick with it until I either get an overwhelming urge to stitch Christmas stuff or I finish it. Obviously the preference is the latter I will work in the latest Mirabilia RR installment over Thanksgiving, but that will be another incarnation of Queen Mermaid. Also, working slowly on a baby blanket (crochet) for a dear friend that has unexpectedly fostered a new baby girl. This past weekend, it finally got cool enough to break out the soup pot. -

Girly socks?
21 Nov 2009 | 2:33 amWhat do you think?I'm going to knit some socks for my brother for Christmas, and I showed him this pattern as an example of cables, and he said he liked the pattern.Soooo. Where are all the feminist Romantic Comedies?
18 Nov 2009 | 11:42 pmJessamy and I watched the movie Wedding Planner last night (nothing else was on) and despite some big news (which I'll share about soon ...) it was all I could think of this morning. Despite the two main characters being together in the end (big surprise), it's not actually a happy ending. The J.Lo character is a nice person, the M.M. character is not.So instead of trying to go back to sleep this morning, I was analyzing the love interest's faults, which goes as follows (hope you're not going to see the movie as I'm going to spoil it):1. He's wasteful. He throws out all the MnMs, except the… -
From sock to glove
14 Nov 2009 | 2:04 amWay back in September I had started a sock from Cookie A's Sock Innovation book. It's a 37 pattern repeat, but I had been amused by it for the few hours I had managed to actually work on it. It being a sock, I had decided to skip the gauge swatch and just start knitting. Everything was looking good, the two times Jessamy tried it on, it fit. And then, the inevitable happened. 5.5 inches from the cuff I handed the sock to her to try it on again ... it was too small. So, instead of socks, she's getting gloves. Now, this actually happened two weeks ago, and ever since then I've been trying to… -
Holy Island
8 Nov 2009 | 1:21 amNo, not I'm talking about England in general.Yesterday we went to Holy Island, a small island just off of the eastern coast. It's famous for a few things, one being that St. Cuthbert, one of the most celebrated saints in England, lived there. It's also where the Lindisfarne Gospels were written, the island's causeway is only open during certain hours of the day, resulting in the occasional news story about unfortunate people getting stuck in the water after they try to cross at the wrong time, and they manufacture mead (yes, we did buy some). Here is Jessamy and our roommate on our way to the…

Pink Floral Chirimen-Covered Notebook
6 Sep 2009 | 6:36 pmI worked on a quick little project yesterday afternoon, covering a standard composition notebook with some pretty chirimen I had. Getting the fabric to lay flat and smooth out was a bit tricky in parts, especially working with the adhesive at the same time, but I think it turned out ok. I’ve actually done this with a few other books, but hadn’t taken photos of the end result. I’m using another one at the moment for keeping notes, but I decided to post this one in my shop. I might make some others, though possibly in different sizes and designs. -
Pretty Things
26 Jul 2009 | 9:20 pmAs I wrote last time, I’ve been slowly working my way back into crafting through some simple projects, namely postcards. I’ve tried to keep some of that up as much as I’ve had time for it, and I have a few more little projects to share. To push myself into making things, I signed up for a Paper Source class with a co-worker, at a newer location they opened up in Palo Alto, which isn’t far from here. They have these “girls night out” events, and this one was themed “Indian Summer,” to coincide with their new India collection of papers and rubber… -
Summer Postcards
28 Jun 2009 | 4:45 pmI’ve been trying to ease back into crafting, so I thought I’d start with something simple, like making postcards. A friend showed me some collages she’d done on cardboard and other sturdy materials, so I thought it might be easy enough to cut up a few images and paste things together. I’ve been sending store-bought postcards through Postcrossing, but it’s really up to you what you send. I thought having some pressure, like in a swap, would help, so I signed up for a handmade postcard swap on Swap-Bot. The theme was open, so that made it easier. Unfortunately, I… -
Mmm, Letterpress!
26 May 2009 | 7:35 pmI am a big fan of letterpress, and while searching for some letterpress cards on Etsy, came across a lovely shop called Letterpress Delicacies. They have some simple greeting card designs, along with some with friendly animals, but I just wanted to share the site with you all. On a side note, I updated the blog template, so if you see any weirdness, let me know. I poked around though, and it seems to be working ok so far.

Coming up for air!
16 Nov 2009 | 7:06 amI decided to go backwards with The Book process. I was working diligently on the one project that needed the most attention (a full length dress) but wasn't feeling like I was going to make the December 1st deadline no matter how hard I worked. I have my wonderful stitchers working on the other big projects too, so I know that it will get done, but I just hadn't seen any evidence. So Friday I changed my strategy and hauled out the projects that were "almost" finished (many times I have stitchers work the major pieces of ... -

Haircut, check!
6 Oct 2009 | 11:51 amIt's scurry scurry around here lately. Not only is Quilt Market in town I am also running around getting ready to head to the studio to film the next season of Knit & Crochet Today! I just dropped off my wardrobe at the cleaners so everything will look crisp on camera, I'm busy working on the step outs for the demos that I'm doing (step outs are all the little in process pieces that make the magic of television happen so that I can demo each step in making the final project). And I got my hair ...

Acorn Cook Stove, circa 1914
19 Nov 2009 | 10:15 am~ Acorn cookstove, circa 1914 ~This isn't the greatest photo I've ever taken but it does show our cook stove; an Acorn, made in 1914. The stove stop has seven burners, one of which is a sauce simmer and all are propane gas. The three ovens are electric and the warming oven is at top left. One of the ovens is hot, one cool and one is a roasting oven and all work. It's a great stove and I've loved using it even though when our electric goes out, only the burners work. In the winter, when a storm comes, I try and make sure I've got bread made so we're not without if the electric goes out...which… -
Ennui and Give-Away
18 Nov 2009 | 5:17 amLately, there's been a sense of ennui around here. Nothing definite, nothing I can, quite, put my finger upon but, a very real, air of ennui. The dictionary says ennui is "a feeling of utter weariness and discontent resulting from satiety or lack of interest; boredom". I am not bored nor do I have a lack of interest; in truth, I have so many interests I tend to be scattered without focus or concentration. As to "satiety", that's not true either except in the idea of being satiated with work. There's always work to be done and I am overwhelmed with work, to the point of being so far… -

The Place Where Morning Gathers
3 Nov 2009 | 6:39 pm~ the place where morning gathers at Thistle Cove Farm ~ Are you familiar with Rich Mullins? He was a extremely gifted Christian song writer and musician who passed away in 1997 but left behind a legacy of music and words that are haunting in their beauty and are being sung still today. He played several instruments and was best known for his skill on the hammer dulcimer; you've probably sung his songs in worship services. Sing your Praise to the Lord and Awesome God are two of his songs. His last major work, Canticle of the Plains, was loosely based on the life of St. Francis of… -
November - Full Beaver Moon
2 Nov 2009 | 4:49 pmHallelujah! Daylight savings time is behind us for a few brief months. It's not that I mind it during the spring and summer but for whatever strange reason, by the time we slouch toward October, my body rhythms are totally skewed. Yesterday, I woke up and felt approaching normal; this morning I work up and felt like I was reborn and does it ever feel great! I skipped exercise class, opting to give the house more than a lick and a promise and, while I didn't finish, the start was enough to make me happy. We call the November full moon a Full Beaver Moon because there was still time to set…

Beadle Beadle Bead
22 Nov 2009 | 10:13 amA couple nights ago, I took some time to go through my giant tackle box ‘o’ beads to see if there was anything interesting I could make. I ended up getting some good, simple projects out of various leftover semiprecious stone beads and some new 24-gauge copper wire. I don’t have any copper findings yet (namely, ear wires and a neck chain) and I don’t think I should be spending money on such things until after Christmas, so here they are in all their unfinished glory. I scored these goldstone donuts at JoAnn’s last month with a 50% off coupon (Yay!) The… -

A Look Back: Crocheted Turkey Handbag

motivation
22 Nov 2009 | 7:25 am… or lack therof. I decided awhile back to crochet and sell the items on Etsy to try to raise some side money to help launch this project. I have been 98% done with my newest project for a number of weeks now, but for some reason procrastinated like mad in finishing it. I finally pushed myself to finish it this morning. I’ve listed the scarf and handwarmers to friends and family first. If there aren’t any takers, I’ll list them on Etsy. I’m finishing up another simple scarf this week. And I’ll get more yarn. Begin & continue. Rinse &… -

22 Nov 2009 | 6:39 amYou know, I recently started this little project with cotton yarn. I was going to make a bunch of squares, put them together and have a kind of light weight ‘lapghan’ or something to that effect. I had a couple of balls of this ‘Original Peaches and Creme’. I got two squares made. I needed more yarn. So I shag on down to Hobby Lobby. Nada. Walmart. Nada. JoAnns. Nada. Michaels. Nada I know Walmart should probably carry this stuff. Well, the couple of Walmarts I went to here in Albuquerque, they never heard of it. (And yes, New Mexico IS in the US of A) AHHHHHH!!!!! I…

Knitting: Bringing it home for Thanksgiving
22 Nov 2009 | 2:41 amThanksgiving is approaching and we're reminded of family and home. An idealistic scene is Currier and Ives "The Knitting Lesson". Parts & Pieces
17 Nov 2009 | 2:13 pmWhen we introduced our new Bamboo Interchangeable Needle Set we were also excited about being able to offer the parts individually. Holiday Inspiration
13 Nov 2009 | 9:27 amWell, despite my best efforts involving avoidance and denial, the holidays are nearly upon us. I love the holiday season, but this year everything is moving so fast I’m worried I’m just going to miss it all as it flies by in a blur. I’ve been feeling somewhat overwhelmed with all that needs to be done and I’m not even talking about knitting projects. Turkey in the oven…almost!
21 Nov 2009 | 7:01 pmSo, back to tradition. I really am a Thanksgiving lover and yes, I’ll be cooking just like most of you . As of today, it’s a bit questionable who I’ll be cooking for. Both my grand-daughters just came down with the flu, now my son has it too. So far my daughter-in-law is fine, but from what I’ve heard of this nasty bug, she may be next! I don’t know if it’s the swine flu. They no longer test for it. Have any of you had this horrible little creature visit your home? On a happier note, If you haven’t entered a name for the little squirrel, you… -
I’m skipping Thanksgiving
19 Nov 2009 | 3:18 pmI’m think I might just skip Thanksgiving. Haven’t told my family yet, but when they all show up, wouldn’t it be great if I handed each one a box of Christmas decorations? Get to work and they’ll get a “bite” to eat later; maybe a pizza or something like that. These little guys are just waiting for them, along with hundreds of other ornaments packed away in the garage! Think how fast it would all get done! No dreaded day after Thanksgiving, when my husband drags himself out to the garage, groaning the whole time, to get… -

I was working away at the computer today and I happened to look over and see Chelsea sleeping about 2 ft. away. I decided it was a photo moment. Camera was right next to the computer so I grabbed it and did some practice shots! Here she is, sleeping in her little bed. Cute photo, but too many distractions in the background. 11 Nov 2009 | 8:48 pmIt’s project week at Bunny Hill. The tables are a bit cluttered, and there’s fabric everywhere, but that’s a good thing. It means I’m working! I never have enough room. If there’s a spare inch of table space I fill it with something. Things look orderly in my photos, but if you could see what I copped out you’d laugh! Here’s the fabrics for a new quilt I’m working on. It’s the new line from the French General & Moda Fabrics called “Rural Jardin”. I’ll add some basics and a few other fabrics and maybe, just maybe,…

Knitting is Fun...Right?
19 Nov 2009 | 10:37 amI meet many knitters--usually, though not limited to, advanced beginners--who become frantic about real or imagined mistakes. They rush up, breathless and anxious, saying they "don't know how to fix it," they "don't know how to 'go back'," or even that they "think it's ruined" ("it" being their projects).More often than not, the real problem knitters face is their agitation, which prevents them from really seeing what's going on and how best to address it. Honestly. Once a knitter progresses past the ultra-beginner stage, he or she possesses the power to diagnose and fix 90 percent (or more)… -

They knit up quickly, look impressive, and fit frosty feet of the female and male varieties! And I'll bet, if you ask my husband, he'll say warm toes are sexy any day of the year. You know you want to...Not a Ravelry member? That's OK -- you can use PayPal. Drop me a line at KnitSix@gmail.com, send… -
Lace Knitting Tutorial
18 Sep 2009 | 11:37 amKristi (from Shalimar Yarns) and I put together a lace tutorial for her blog this week. She snapped some awesome pictures, and I helped craft some clear (we hope!) instructions for basic lace knitting. Here's a sample (using Zoe Sock in Blue Raspberry):K2tog tbl (an alternative to SSK): This is a left-leaning decrease. Insert your right needle tip into the first two stitches on the left needle from right to left (back to front)...... and knit them together. To read the rest of the Lace Tutorial, just head on over to Shalimar Yarns' blog. Kamille Socks: New pattern, new photos
17 Sep 2009 | 11:41 amPhoto courtesy of Shalimar YarnsHere's a photo of Kamille, which debuted at Sock Summit. This sock was knitted up inShalimar's Zoe Sock, in the Damson colorway. Another, in Saffron, is being knit even as I type, so I'll have a new picture for you soon.By the way, Kamille is spelled with a K because it's a Norwegian word, meaning Chamomile.I also have some lovely new photos of my Villette socks:Kristi from Shalimar Yarns modeled the sock, while I snapped pix using her wonderful camera (it makes every picture look good). Here's a close-up of the heel flap detail. Both patterns are available from… -

Tree Mobile WIP
19 Nov 2009 | 2:20 pmThe granny squares I starched yesterday are completely dry and they have kept their rounded shape without being cardboard stiff. Phew! Now I can work on the other parts of the mobile. I had picked up a reddish branch from one of my bushwalks and kept it with the intention of using it as decoration in the home some day. Well, the day has arrived! The branch is now the frame of my tree mobile. I’ve cut it in half and tied them together in the middle with kitchen twine. I hung the granny squares from the centre at the same time. This is just a mock up of what the mobile will be like in the… -
Starching Granny Squares
18 Nov 2009 | 1:40 pmRemember the Mystery Christmas CAL from Sarah London that I was working on? Sarah has revealed that the crocheted granny squares get turned into a Christmas Advent Tree. You can view her tree here. I’ve mentioned before that I would like to finish my tree differently. I would like to turn mine into a tree mobile. It’s a crazy idea and I have no idea whether it’ll work but doesn’t it sound fun! The first step is to starch the granny squares. I don’t want floppy pieces flopping around in the mobile. So I set up my dining table with old newspapers and cling wrap. -
Hello. My name is…
17 Nov 2009 | 9:34 pmMy new crochet creation desperately needs a name. He is an apple from top to bottom and is as cute as cute can be. He’s met Missy Strawberry and likes her a lot. He think she’s very sweet. She thinks he is odd because… Well, let’s just eavesdrop on them, shall we? Missy: Hello! My name is Missy Strawberry. How are you? Apple: Hello Missy! Nice to meet you. My name is… hmmm… I don’t have a name. And then there’s a long awkward silence. Could you help name him so they can be firends? Oh and I forgot to mention. He has a baby brother who is also… -

My Creative Space…
12 Nov 2009 | 10:21 pmI’ve crocheted 5 out of the 12 squares for the Mystery Crochet Project. The squares are getting so big! I should have used a smaller hook. DOH! Too late now. Now that I’ve seen what it’s meant to look like in the end, I’m going to do finish mine very differently to Sarah’s. You can view her finished project HERE. Do you like it? I’ve also found some time to knit. I’ve been working on the Vesper {Ravelry} top on and off in between other projects. Yesterday, I had a few spare hours to pass as I was waiting for my brother-in-law to come out of surgery so…

Merry Christmas Poinsettia
15 Nov 2009 | 7:24 pmToday was the day we tackled the poinsettia in the Merry Christmas Mystery Class. We're coming along. When you look at it, we've already completed quite a few squares. I really like the poinsettia. And not just because there are crystals in the center. While that isn't a bad thing, that's not the only thing I like about it. We started with T Stitch in Sparkle Braid covering all the petals and allowing just a bit of the shading to show through. Now, here's the cool part. After all the T Stitch was done we filled in some of the open stitches with Tent Stitch in a darker shade of Sparkle Braid. -
Perfect Pears
9 Nov 2009 | 6:24 amApparently I have a thing for needlepoint pears.Vintage Pears is a Melissa Shirley canvas that I just love. Beverly Churchfield did the stitchguide for it and it is amazing. The stitch selections and thread selections are so much fun they really take the canvas to the next level.I added pears to my line of handpainted canvases this Summer. We have the large and small sizes to fit in different sizes of Stirling bags. This is the large size and it fits the smaller Stirling tote. And here's the small size that fits in the shoulder bag or the accessory bag. The design looks good both horizontal… -
Merry Christmas Lesson #2
1 Nov 2009 | 6:08 pmHere we go. Lesson #2 of the Merry Christmas canvas was today at the shop. We tackled a few more squares. Still many to go but this is a great way to stay on track and feel like you are accomplishing lots! Little goals do the trick. Today we did simple Long Stitch triangles in 2 of the squares. Nothing exotic, we needed an easy square to get us started today. We made a big sparkly pink snowflake. I'm convinced the world would be a better place if it snowed pink. Maybe some purple too. You may have noticed that I like bling. I also try to go for the unexpected, so rather than completely beading… -
What a Wonderful Weekend
29 Oct 2009 | 6:36 pmYou can not imagine how much fun we had last weekend. We had just unpacked the store and were open to welcome customers Tuesday morning. Thursday night Caela Conn Tyler came to teach 3 days of exceptional classes for us. Oh the fun! Friday we had a wonderful lecture/spontaneous painted canvas embellishment class and then Saturday and Sunday we stitched Piazza San Marco.Piazza is a gorgeous piece and so much fun to stitch. Caela has worked out all the details. All we had to do was relax and follow along on the journey. We did have to count but no one seemed to mind. We were entranced with the… -
We're Open!
21 Oct 2009 | 6:30 amThe new store is unpacked and ready for primetime viewing. It really is a very cool space that I think you are going to enjoy. All the stuff that made the old store so me is still here along with lots of fun new things to explore. The walls are still my funky shade of lime green that just makes everything happy. Some of the floors have tiger carpet. (More to come later) All in all a very good move. The move was especially good thanks to the help of a group of very dear friends who kicked in and went well beyond the call of duty to get us unpacked and prettied up in just 48 hours!!! You girls…
